The European Commission stands accused of undermining its own smoke-free ambitions and putting millions of lives at risk by targeting safer nicotine alternatives that are helping smokers to quit. The World Vapers Alliance and Smoke-Free Sweden have both lambasted moves which will mean the new the Tobacco Products Directive will see the EU being on track to miss its 2040 smoke-free goal by 70 years.
The World Vapers’ Alliance told Planet of the Vapes that while the evaluation of the EU’s tobacco rules celebrates that the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) is successfully reducing smoking, the report also opens the door to tighter regulation and outright bans on vapes, heated tobacco, and nicotine pouches, including flavours and disposables, despite the proven success of Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Greece in slashing smoking rates through these accessible alternatives.
