Partner Spotlight – Cristiano Batista, APORVAP, Portugal

Every week, we’ll shine the light on one of the WVA’s outstanding partners. They all advocate for the rights of vapers in their countries.

This week, we are speaking with Cristiano Batista, President of APROVAP Portugal (Associação Portuguesa de Vaporizadores), who talks about the difficulties vapers face in Portugal and how the WVA is supporting his association.

Portugal applies an excise tax to nicotine vaping liquids, which currently stands at 0,32€/ml. Moreover, these products are subject to double taxation (VAT and excise), which comes up to more than €4.2 for every 10ml of nicotine-containing liquid. Portugal is the EU country where vaping is the most expensive (between 5,25 and 7,5€).

As such, the main objectives of APORVAP are to fight this tax insanity, as well as the misinformation about vaping. We’re supported by science that says vaping is much less harmful than smoking.

This is our fight. A Herculean fight, no doubt. Seeing the situation of other countries shows that we are all battling for the same cause despite having different issues. Fighting for our freedom. Fighting for our right to harm reduction. This is what we identified in the magnificent team of the World Vapers Alliance and in the work they do. That’s why we’re together. We know that we can count on you as well as that you can count on us. Together we will succeed.

Vaping can save 200 million lives and flavours play a key role in helping smokers quit. However, policymakers want to limit or ban flavours, putting our effort to end smoking-related deaths in jeopardy.
