Misguided Malaysia

The Malaysian Ministry of Health has announced that it intends to introduce a complete and “non-negotiable” ban on all vape products – despite high smoking rates and a black-market threat. Health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad claimed that vapes cause popcorn lung and are used to take illicit drugs.

The Malaysian Ministry of Health will be targeting the ban on open-pod systems to begin with.

Health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said: “My stance on the issue of cigarettes and vaping remains unchanged. The full enforcement of this Act is our moral responsibility, to protect future generations from the threat of non-communicable diseases and conditions such as popcorn lung. I have issued warnings on this matter before, particularly concerning open pod system vapes. The first step is to ban these vapes, which have been abused for the use of synthetic drugs.”

The World Vapers’ Alliance commented that “while misuse with illicit drugs is a serious issue, the World Vapers’ Alliance argues that the real problem is the black market, which thrives on prohibition and lack of regulation.”
