Vaping in Thailand: The Hidden Realities you should know as a vaper

If you’ve already read the Vaper’s Guide to Thailand, you know the basics: vaping is banned, fines are hefty, and you risk getting into serious trouble if caught. But what’s the reality on the ground? What’s it actually like to be a vaper in Thailand?

I tried gathering information from vapers who traveled there and I can tell you that the situation is not as straightforward as it seems. There are unspoken rules, grey areas, and things you won’t find in official guidelines. And now, the Thai government is doubling down on its crackdown. If you’re planning to visit Thailand soon, here are some additional things you need to know.

The Government is Stepping Up Enforcement

Recently, the Thai government has intensified its fight against vaping, with authorities making more arrests and cracking down on illegal vape sales. Officials are claiming public health concerns, particularly regarding youth vaping, as the main reason for the strict enforcement.

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society has even begun taking action against online sellers, with a special focus on social media platforms where illicit vape sales are booming. This means that not only is vaping illegal, but even purchasing or possessing a vape has become riskier than ever before.

The Black Market is Bigger Than You Think

While Thailand has some of the strictest anti-vaping laws, you’d never guess that from walking through its street markets. Disposable vapes are openly sold in stalls, convenience stores, and even bars. Vendors don’t seem the least bit worried about getting caught, and you can find every flavour imaginable at prices ranging from 300 to 600 Baht (9-18 USD).

But before you rush to buy one, consider this: if you get caught vaping, the same authorities who ignore the vendors will come after you instead. And don’t expect sympathy because you “bought it legally” (spoiler: you didn’t). Thai police are selective and unpredictable, and tourists are often easy targets. There are various kinds of penalties. Being caught vaping could cost you 30,000 Baht (900 USD) fine or/and a jail sentence of up to 5 years.

Airports Are a No-Go Zone

If you think sneaking a vape through customs is easy, think again. Thai authorities have been known to randomly search luggage, and if they find a vape, they will confiscate it—and possibly fine you.

Even worse? Some tourists have been stopped and questioned just for carrying vape-related accessories.

What About Nicotine Pouches and Snus?

If you’re looking to stick to the safer alternative to smoking while in Thailand, nicotine pouches and snus might be your best bet. Unlike vapes, these products are legally available for personal use, and you can find them in some convenience stores or order them online.

That said, if you plan to bring your own supply, be mindful of quantity—while personal use is permitted, commercial importation requires government permits. Carrying large amounts could raise suspicion at customs, potentially leading to fines or confiscation.

Nicotine pouches are not as widespread as traditional tobacco products, but they provide a discreet and legal way to manage cravings while avoiding the risks associated with vaping in Thailand. However, keep in mind that laws around nicotine products can change rapidly, so it’s always a good idea to check for updates before travelling.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a vaper heading to Thailand, you now have a clearer picture of what to expect. The ban is real, but enforcement is inconsistent, and the black market is thriving. With the government stepping up its efforts, the risks are higher than ever. If you decide to risk it, be smart, be discreet, and be prepared for potential consequences.
