UK plans to insert infosheet in cigarette packs

The United Kingdom’s ‘Office for Health Improvement and Disparities’ announced a plan to mandate information sheets for smokers on how to quit inserted into cigarette packs. The WVA welcomes this plan but urges the government to also include information about less harmful alternatives for smokers who are not able to quit.

Information sheets in cigarette boxes could hold significant potential in encouraging smokers to quit or transition to less harmful alternatives. These sheets should provide valuable insights into the health risks associated with smoking, the benefits of quitting, and the availability of alternative products.

To get feedback from the public, a consultation started on August 14 and will be open till October 30.

We encourage all vapers to participate and tell the UK government to include harm reduction messages in the packs.

Here’s how:

Just go to https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/mandating-quit-information-messages-inside-tobacco-packs and directly start to fill out the questionnaire.

What could be on the info sheets?

Showcasing Alternatives:

These sheets could also introduce smokers to less harmful alternatives, such as vaping, nicotine pouches, or other smoke-free products. By providing accurate information about these alternatives, smokers might become more inclined to explore healthier options that could satisfy their nicotine cravings without the harmful combustion byproducts of traditional cigarettes.

Scientific Information:

Presenting factual information about the scientific studies comparing the risks of smoking and alternative products could empower smokers to make informed decisions. This could include data on harm reduction, the success rates of different cessation methods, and the potential benefits of transitioning to less harmful alternatives.

Personal Stories:

Including testimonials or stories from individuals who successfully quit smoking through alternative methods could inspire smokers and offer them hope that they too can make a positive change.

Visual Aids:

Visual aids, such as images comparing the effects of smoking versus the potential benefits of quitting, could enhance the effectiveness of the information sheets.

Ultimately, well-designed and informative information sheets could serve as a catalyst for change by providing smokers with the knowledge, motivation, and resources they need to take steps toward quitting or adopting less harmful alternatives.
