Voor het eerst heeft het agentschap e-sigaretten met een smaak die geen tabak of menthol bevat, goedgekeurd, maar dat is nog niet genoeg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De wetenschappelijke inzichten over smaakstoffen zijn al jaren duidelijk. Volwassenen die e-sigaretten met smaakstoffen gebruiken, hebben <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32501490\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">230% verhoogt de kans om te stoppen met roken<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dan degenen die tabak of smaakloze producten gebruiken. Smaken zijn geen marginale voorkeur. Ze zijn essentieel voor waarom vapen werkt als hulpmiddel voor rokers die willen overstappen. In de VS, alleen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10576309\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.1% van vapers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ze geven aan dat tabak hun enige smaak is, terwijl de rest andere smaken consumeert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Landl, directeur van de World Vapers&#039; Alliance, merkte op:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDe eigen wetenschappers van de FDA wisten dat deze producten aan de norm voldeden. Het blokkeren ervan diende geen enkel doel voor de volksgezondheid.\u201d. <\/span><\/i><b><i>Volwassenen die roken verdienen toegang tot minder schadelijke alternatieven die daadwerkelijk voor hen werken, en smaken spelen een grote rol in waarom die alternatieven werken. Veel meer producten moeten onmiddellijk worden goedgekeurd.<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volgens een <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/policy\/trump-pressures-fda-commissioner-to-approve-flavored-vapes-9dad81ee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Volgens een rapport hadden de eigen wetenschappelijke beoordelaars van de FDA de producten met toegevoegde smaakstoffen al goedgekeurd. Het bureau van commissaris Makary schortte die goedkeuringen vervolgens op zonder duidelijke rechtvaardiging vanuit het oogpunt van de volksgezondheid, waardoor een proces dat de eigen experts van het agentschap al hadden afgerond, werd vertraagd. De uiteindelijke goedkeuring kwam pas uren nadat president Trump Makary naar verluidt rechtstreeks onder druk had gezet tijdens een vergadering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De data ondersteunen dit. Het gebruik van e-sigaretten onder adolescenten in de VS is het laagst in tien jaar. Ook het roken onder adolescenten is historisch laag. Het argument dat smaakjes onvermijdelijk leiden tot meer gebruik onder jongeren, blijkt niet te kloppen. Het beperken van smaakjes heeft volwassen gebruikers alleen maar teruggedreven naar sigaretten of naar ongereguleerde producten van de zwarte markt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De vraag is nu of deze beslissing een echte verschuiving markeert in de manier waarop de FDA schadebeperking benadert, of dat het een uitzondering blijft. Miljoenen rokers hebben toegang nodig tot minder schadelijke alternatieven die werken. Deze goedkeuring van een paar gearomatiseerde producten is een begin.
