Ondanks recente vooruitgang is de regering nu\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mononews.gr\/business\/pharma-health\/apofasi-stathmos-apo-adoni-georgiadi-telos-stis-gefseis-ton-ilektronikon-tsigaron\">een verbod overwegen<\/a>\u00a0over vape-smaken \u2013 een stap die de moeizaam verworven resultaten van het land op het gebied van het terugdringen van het aantal rokers en het verbeteren van de volksgezondheid dreigt te ondermijnen.<\/p>\n<p>Griekenland heeft al lang een van de hoogste rookpercentages in de Europese Unie. Volgens\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/eurobarometer\/surveys\/detail\/2995\">Eurostat<\/a>, Het aantal rokers in Griekenland steeg van 38% in 2015 naar 41% in 2021, terwijl in veel andere EU-landen de rookcijfers juist daalden. Dit staat in schril contrast met Zweden, waar het aantal rokers sterk is gedaald en het land nu op het punt staat rookvrij te worden.<\/p>\n<p>Er is echter een lichtpuntje. Sinds 2019, toen Griekenland schadebeperking officieel als een kernpijler van zijn tabaksbeleid omarmde, is het land erin geslaagd de eerder groeiende trend van roken om te buigen. Het aantal rokers is nu gedaald tot 36%. Dit is een opmerkelijke prestatie vergeleken met de stagnatie of zelfs terugval elders in de EU.<\/p>\n<p>Ondanks deze vooruitgang overweegt Griekenland nu een verbod op vape-smaken. Dit is een zeer misplaatste stap. Smaken zijn een van de aantrekkelijkste aspecten van minder schadelijke alternatieven voor roken, en het is bewezen dat ze rokers helpen over te stappen en van sigaretten af te blijven.<\/p>\n<p>Een van de meest voorkomende argumenten voor een smaakverbod is het zogenaamde &quot;gateway&quot;-effect: vapen en soortgelijke producten leiden ertoe dat jongeren beginnen met roken. De gegevens in Griekenland ondersteunen deze bewering echter simpelweg niet. 98% van alle nicotinegebruikers in Griekenland begon met sigaretten. Slechts 1% begon met vapen, zakjes of verhitte tabak. Door een dergelijk verbod te steunen, zouden beleidsmakers volwassenen terugdringen in de drang om te roken of zich op de zwarte markt te begeven, wat levens in gevaar zou brengen en wetenschappelijk bewijs zou negeren. Onderzoek toont consequent aan dat smaken een cruciale rol spelen bij het helpen stoppen met roken. Een verbod negeert zowel het bewijs als de duidelijke wil van de bevolking, en straft honderdduizenden volwassen ex-rokers die dankzij smaken zijn gestopt met roken.<\/p>\n<p>Griekenland is niet het enige land dat een dergelijk verbod overweegt. Zeven EU-landen (Denemarken, Estland, Finland, Hongarije, Litouwen, Nederland en Sloveni\u00eb) hebben al wetten aangenomen die vape-smaken verbieden. Ook Spanje en Belgi\u00eb overwegen soortgelijke maatregelen.<\/p>\n<p>De resultaten zijn rampzalig. In Denemarken bijvoorbeeld, een onderzoek van de\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tholosfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Denmark-DE.pdf\">Stichting Tholos<\/a>\u00a0ontdekte dat 93% van de vapers zegt dat het gemakkelijk is om verboden smaken te vinden, wat een bloeiende zwarte markt aanwakkert en de rechtshandhaving ondermijnt. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.journaldemontreal.com\/2024\/06\/09\/nos-pires-scenarios-se-sont-realises-des-vapoteurs-se-rabattent-sur-la-cigarette\">Quebec<\/a>, 36% van de eerste vapers begon alweer met roken slechts zes maanden na een smaakverbod.<\/p>\n<p>Ook de algemene aanpak van de EU om de schade door tabaksgebruik te beperken, schiet tekort. De EU streeft naar een rookpercentage van 5% in 2040, maar de huidige trend is dat het percentage pas in 2100 onder de 5% zal dalen \u2013 een volle 60 jaar achter de doelstelling, wederom gebaseerd op Eurostat. Ondertussen levert Zweden&#039;s omarming van schadebeperking concrete resultaten op, met het land op de rand van rookvrij worden.<\/p>\n<div class=\"midarticle-ads\">\n<div id=\"adsuiteScrollAd\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Wetenschappelijk bewijs is duidelijk: smaken vergroten de kans op\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32501490\/\">stoppen met roken door 230%<\/a>. Alleen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10576309\/\">2.1% van de vapers geeft aan dat ze tabak roken<\/a>\u00a0als hun exclusieve smaak, terwijl de rest andere smaken consumeert.<\/p>\n<p>Beleidsmakers moeten de feiten volgen en naar consumenten luisteren.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/nl_nl\/every-life-counts\/\">100.000 mensen<\/a>\u00a0hebben de petitie van de World Vapers&#039; Alliance tegen een smaakverbod ondertekend, en uit de consultatie van de Europese Commissie uit 2023 bleek dat een\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tholosfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Tholos_Policy_Paper_v71.pdf\">meerderheid steunt schadebeperking<\/a>\u00a0producten, inclusief smaken.<\/p>\n<p>Als Griekenland serieus werk wil maken van het terugdringen van het aantal rokers en het beschermen van de volksgezondheid, moet het schadebeperking blijven ondersteunen en deze niet ondermijnen met ondoordachte verboden.
