Deze stap, aangekondigd op een dag die bedoeld was om de volksgezondheid te bevorderen, onderstreept hoezeer de WHO FCTC afstand neemt van zowel de wetenschap als de praktijkervaringen van miljoenen ex-rokers. Smaken zijn niet bedoeld om jongeren aan te spreken \u2013 ze zijn een essentieel hulpmiddel dat volwassen rokers helpt succesvol over te stappen op veiligere alternatieven en te stoppen met roken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wanneer beleidsmakers smaakstoffen verbieden, stoppen mensen niet zomaar met nicotine. In plaats daarvan gaan velen weer roken of wenden ze zich tot de zwarte markt, waardoor de volksgezondheid verslechtert in plaats van verbetert. Internationale gegevens tonen consequent aan dat verboden op smaakstoffen het aantal sigarettenrokers onder zowel volwassenen als jongeren doen toenemen. In plaats van de volksgezondheid te beschermen, riskeren deze verboden jarenlange vooruitgang in het terugdringen van de tabaksschade teniet te doen. Onderzoek en getuigenissen van ex-rokers tonen herhaaldelijk aan dat tabaksvrije smaken mensen helpen afstand te nemen van de smaak van sigaretten, waardoor de kans op terugval kleiner wordt. Verbrandbare tabak is dodelijk, terwijl vapen en nicotinezakjes aanzienlijk minder schadelijk zijn. De manier waarop nicotine wordt geconsumeerd, is veel belangrijker dan de stof zelf. Smaken spelen een cruciale rol bij het helpen van rokers om die levensreddende overstap te maken. Landen die smaken en schadebeperking ondersteunen \u2013 zoals Zweden en het Verenigd Koninkrijk \u2013 hebben het aantal rokers zien dalen, terwijl landen die smaken verbieden, tragere vooruitgang en meer schade zien. De onwetendheid van de FCTC kost levens en verhindert miljoenen mensen toegang te krijgen tot veiligere alternatieven. Het belicht de succesverhalen van mensen die dankzij vapen en smaken zijn gestopt met roken, en roept op tot beleid dat de toegang tot producten met een lager risico ondersteunt in plaats van beperkt. Terwijl de WHO FCTC Wereld Niet-Roken Dag aangrijpt om een verbod te promoten, gebruikt de wereldwijde vapinggemeenschap Wereld Vape Dag om zich in te zetten voor evidence-based oplossingen die levens redden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Het is tijd dat de WHO FCTC naar de wetenschap en consumenten luistert. Verboden op smaakstoffen redden geen levens \u2013 ze dwingen mensen terug te gaan roken en wakkeren de illegale markt aan. We moeten de keuzevrijheid van volwassenen verdedigen, schadebeperking ondersteunen en evidence-based beleid eisen dat daadwerkelijk helpt om roken te stoppen.
