Brussel, 15 april 2025 \u2013 De World Vapers' Alliance (WVA) reageert met bezorgdheid op de Bild Zeitung<\/a> Rapport waarin het nicotinebelastingplan van de Europese Commissie wordt onthuld. De EU overweegt een verhoging van de sigarettenprijzen (30%) en, nog schandaliger, is van plan de belasting op vapingproducten en andere minder schadelijke nicotine-alternatieven drastisch te verhogen. Nu de offici\u00eble aankondiging mogelijk al morgen komt, dringt de WVA er bij de Commissie op aan deze roekeloze stap te staken. Deze zou miljoenen rokers die proberen te stoppen, de allerarmsten het hardst treffen en anti-EU-populisten een krachtig nieuw argument opleveren.<\/p>\n

Michael Landl, directeur van de World Vapers' Alliance, zei:<\/p>\n

\u201cDit is niet alleen slecht beleid, het is een ramp voor de volksgezondheid die leidt tot sociale onrechtvaardigheid. De Commissie negeert de wetenschap, straft de armen en geeft anti-EU-stemmen precies wat ze willen: bewijs dat Brussel wereldvreemd is en zich niets aantrekt van gewone mensen.\u201d

Het aantal rokers is het hoogst onder Europeanen met een laag inkomen. Zij kunnen zich de hogere prijzen ook het minst veroorloven. \u201cDoor de belastingen over de hele linie te verhogen, maakt de Commissie het voor de meest kansarmen nog moeilijker om aan hun sigarettenverslaving te ontsnappen. Vapen en andere minder schadelijke alternatieven zouden minder belast moeten worden, niet meer, om rokers alle prikkels te geven om over te stappen.
