Het land kan vandaag de dag met trots zijn resultaten presenteren. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.co.uk\/viewarticle\/uk-smoking-rate-hits-historic-low-2023a1000kr4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.medscape.co.uk\/viewarticle\/uk-smoking-rate-hits-historic-low-2023a1000kr4&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1700832438261000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1F1lLYaMMfQeyHZzFpn5HY\">laagste<\/a><\/strong> Het rookpercentage is ongekend laag. Deze successen zijn geen toeval, maar het resultaat van zeer strategisch en vooruitstrevend beleid gericht op het verminderen van de schadelijke gevolgen van roken. Toch lijkt het Verenigd Koninkrijk een stap verder te gaan. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/10\/05\/uk-smoking-ban-england-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/10\/05\/uk-smoking-ban-england-age\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1700832438261000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2Z0PX4adl3kVYwYAc3ogz3\">verontrustende omweg<\/a><\/strong> Deze vooruitgang is echter niet tenietgedaan. De lopende herziening van het overheidsbeleid ten aanzien van e-sigaretten en tabak dreigt de behaalde resultaten teniet te doen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\">Het eerste punt op de agenda is vapen. Smaken in e-sigaretten, die veel ex-rokers noemen als een belangrijke reden om te stoppen met roken, staan op het punt streng aan banden te worden gelegd. Voor wie niet bekend is met het traject van een roker die probeert te stoppen, lijkt smaak misschien een onbelangrijke kwestie. Het is echter cruciaal. Smaken bieden een zintuiglijke aantrekkingskracht die gebruikers afleidt van de smaak van sigaretten. Door deze smaken mogelijk te beperken, riskeren we een belangrijke motivatie voor rokers om over te stappen weg te nemen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\">Bovendien staat het gemak van wegwerp-e-sigaretten, die voor veel rokers een opstapje zijn geweest naar vapen, onder druk. Het verbod op wegwerp-e-sigaretten negeert het bredere plaatje: elke roker die overstapt, is een winstpunt voor de volksgezondheid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\">Maar het meest raadselachtige is dat <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/uk-smoking-ban-age-sunak-b2424356.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/uk-smoking-ban-age-sunak-b2424356.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1700832438261000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0nPrDuNsfjKr4ePr-Zk34b\">voorstel<\/a><\/strong> Een generatieverbod op roken invoeren. Hoewel het idee om te voorkomen dat kinderen die dit jaar 14 worden ooit legaal sigaretten kunnen kopen op het eerste gezicht gedurfd en visionair klinkt, heeft het een zorgwekkende bijkomstigheid. Het verbod geldt namelijk ook voor verhittingsproducten. De volledige omarming van een utopisch ideaal als het om roken gaat, zou het hele doel om roken terug te dringen in gevaar kunnen brengen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\">Aan de andere kant van de wereld zijn verschillende benaderingen ontwikkeld die een waardevolle casestudy vormen over het potentieel van producten die tabak verhitten in plaats van verbranden. Neem bijvoorbeeld Japan. In de afgelopen zeven jaar heeft Japan een enorme verandering in het rookgedrag doorgemaakt. Het aantal <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jt.com\/investors\/results\/forecast\/pdf\/2023\/Third_Quarter\/20231031_07.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.jt.com\/investors\/results\/forecast\/pdf\/2023\/Third_Quarter\/20231031_07.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1700832438262000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1TsA3yNUCwoc13iGgPaAE0\">sigaretten gerookt<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is met meer dan 50% gedaald.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\">Om dat in perspectief te plaatsen: de totale sigarettenmarkt in Japan bedroeg in de eerste negen maanden van 2023 69,4 miljard sigaretten, een daling ten opzichte van 144,8 miljard in dezelfde periode van 2016. Deze dramatische daling is geen geringe prestatie voor een land dat ooit bekend stond om zijn diepgewortelde rookcultuur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\">Wat was de drijvende kracht achter deze verandering? De wijdverspreide toepassing van producten die tabak verhitten in plaats van verbranden. Deze producten, die tabak verhitten in plaats van verbranden, geven rokers het gevoel en het ritueel van roken, maar met een aanzienlijk lager risico op schade. De ervaring in Japan onderstreept het belang van een breed scala aan methoden om de schade te beperken. Door producten te gebruiken die tabak verhitten in plaats van verbranden, hebben ze het aantal rokers in minder dan tien jaar tijd gehalveerd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\">Terugkomend op het standpunt van het Verenigd Koninkrijk, is het duidelijk dat een verbod op deze producten een gemiste kans van aanzienlijke omvang zou zijn. Hoewel vapen een cruciaal instrument blijft in de strijd tegen schadelijke gevolgen, laat het Japanse voorbeeld zien dat producten die tabak verhitten in plaats van verbranden een rol kunnen spelen bij het bereiken van onze rookvrije ambities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\">De weg vooruit moet niet die van verboden en zware beperkingen zijn, maar die van begrip en afleiding. De missie van het Verenigd Koninkrijk moet zijn om rokers alle mogelijke middelen te bieden om te stoppen. Van vapen en nicotinezakjes tot producten die tabak verhitten in plaats van verbranden, de nadruk moet liggen op het beperken van de schade. Iedere roker is anders en een uniforme aanpak is onpraktisch en contraproductief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\" dir=\"ltr\">Nu de Britse regering haar volgende stappen overweegt, zou ze inspiratie moeten putten uit het succesverhaal van Japan. In plaats van obstakels op te werpen, zouden we de weg naar schadebeperking moeten verbreden.
