Een veelbesproken onderwerp is het idee om de belastingen op vapenproducten te verhogen. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hoewel de intentie wellicht is om problemen met de volksgezondheid aan te pakken en staatsinkomsten te genereren, is het essentieel om de mogelijke valkuilen van een dergelijke stap kritisch te onderzoeken.<\/p>\n<p>In een recente <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/south-africas-new-vaping-tax-wont-deter-young-smokers-209838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opiniestuk<\/a> gepubliceerd in <em>Het gesprek<\/em>, Professor Nicole Vellios en professor Corne van Walbeek uitten hun bedenkingen bij het huidige belastingvoorstel van de Zuid-Afrikaanse overheid. In het artikel pleiten ze voor een minimumaccijns op alle vapenproducten en een verhoging van de accijns op e-sigaretten met het inflatiepercentage, plus een vooraf aangekondigd extra percentage.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Onbedoelde gevolgen<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Een automatische verdere belastingverhoging zou er onbedoeld toe leiden dat vapers weer gaan roken of terechtkomen op de ongereguleerde illegale markt. Voor degenen die met succes zijn gestopt met roken door te vapen, kunnen hogere belastingen een financi\u00eble last vormen die hen ertoe aanzet weer te gaan roken.<\/p>\n<p>Dergelijke onbedoelde gevolgen kunnen gezondheidsproblemen die verband houden met roken verergeren en de algemene doelstellingen op het gebied van de volksgezondheid belemmeren.<\/p>\n<p>Er is genoeg <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36103752\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bewijs<\/a> dat vapen en sigaretten substituutproducten zijn. Enerzijds is dit positief, omdat is aangetoond dat vapen aanzienlijk minder schadelijk is dan roken. Dat consumenten kiezen voor het minder schadelijke alternatief is iets om te vieren.
