Zowel consumenten als leden van het Europees Parlement dringen er bij de Europese Unie (EU) op aan om actie te ondernemen en de succesvolle Zweedse strategie voor stoppen met roken te volgen. De EU is er tot nu toe niet in geslaagd een effectieve aanpak te implementeren om het aantal rokers te verminderen, terwijl Zweden, het enige land ter wereld dat op het punt staat rookvrij te worden, enorme aandacht krijgt voor zijn opmerkelijke prestaties.<\/p>\n<p>De EU voert, samen met vele andere landen wereldwijd, een contraproductieve strategie om de rookepidemie te bestrijden. De aanpak bestaat erin alternatieve producten net zo schadelijk te laten lijken als tabak, de toegang ertoe te beperken en de belastingen te verhogen om ze duurder te maken en het gebruik ervan te ontmoedigen. En die strategie levert nogal teleurstellende resultaten op.<\/p>\n<p>Ondanks alle inspanningen van de Europese instellingen ligt het totale rookpercentage in de EU nog steeds op 25% en sterven er jaarlijks ongeveer 700.000 mensen aan rookgerelateerde ziekten.
