Als onderdeel van een financieringsprogramma van de voormalige burgemeester van New York, Michael Bloomberg, dat zogenaamd gericht is op het wereldwijd terugdringen van tabaksgebruik, is een groot deel bestemd voor "het terugdringen van tabaksgebruik in lage- en middeninkomenslanden (LMIC's)", wat ironisch genoeg precies het tegenovergestelde is van wat deze beweging tot nu toe heeft bereikt.<\/h4>\n

Eerder dit jaar heeft Bloomberg Philanthropies aangekondigd<\/a> Het zou neerkomen op een investering van 15.420 miljoen biljoen dollar in de wereldwijde vermindering van tabaksgebruik, waarvan naar verluidt 15.280 miljoen dollar bestemd is voor de ondersteuning van lage- en middeninkomenslanden in de strijd tegen tabaksgebruik. De door de groep gepromote strategie\u00ebn ter vermindering van de schadelijke gevolgen van tabaksgebruik (THR) blijken echter aantoonbaar de stoppen-met-roken-percentages te vertragen.<\/p>\n

Naar aanleiding van de aankondiging van Bloomberg legde de World Vapers' Alliance (WVA) in een persbericht uit dat, gezien de vijandige houding van de groep ten opzichte van producten voor het verminderen van tabaksgebruik, voorstanders van e-sigaretten helaas verdere antiwetenschappelijke desinformatiecampagnes tegen schadebeperking verwachten. En of het nu onderdeel is van een opzettelijke aanval of een goedbedoelde maar misleidende campagne, dit geld zal naar verwachting veel meer kwaad dan goed doen.<\/p>\n

Sterker nog, Bloomberg persbericht<\/a> Er werd gespecificeerd dat $140 miljoen bestemd zou zijn voor de bestrijding van vapen onder tieners in de VS, maar er werd niet vermeld dat een eerdere $160 miljoen<\/a> De subsidie was bedoeld om smaakstoffen in e-sigaretten te verbieden. Dit is tragisch, aangezien talloze wetenschappelijke studies en experts op het gebied van stoppen met roken blijven benadrukken dat smaakstoffen cruciaal zijn om volwassen rokers te motiveren over te stappen op veiligere alternatieven.<\/p>\n
