De Europese Commissie heeft in haar "Global Health Strategy" aangekondigd dat het nieuwe leidende principe zal zijn om "prioriteit te geven aan het aanpakken van de onderliggende oorzaken van gezondheidsproblemen". Helaas slaagt de strategie er niet in om een van de belangrijkste oorzaken van gezondheidsproblemen aan te pakken: roken. Schadebeperking door tabak moet worden opgenomen in een dergelijke strategie om door roken veroorzaakte ziekten te bestrijden, aldus de campagnegroep World Vapers' Alliance.<\/h4>\n

Michael Landl, directeur van de World Vapers' Alliance, merkte op: \u201cDe EU-commissie negeert opnieuw de wetenschap en de stemmen van consumenten. Schadebeperking door tabak moet een belangrijk element worden van alle gezondheidsbeleid voor de EU. Zevenhonderdduizend mensen sterven elk jaar door roken en tegelijkertijd strijdt de Commissie tegen minder schadelijke alternatieven. De wetenschap is duidelijk: vapen is veel minder schadelijk dan roken en is een van de meest effectieve hulpmiddelen om te stoppen met roken. Consumenten eisen dat de Commissie deze realiteit eindelijk accepteert.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

De World Vapers' Alliance heeft een verzoekschrift<\/a> Ondertekend door meer dan 4.000 EU-burgers aan de leden van het Parlement, uitten zij hun bezorgdheid over de negatieve houding ten opzichte van vapen binnen de EU-instellingen. De petitie riep de EU op om de schade door tabaksgebruik te beperken en af te zien van verboden op smaakstoffen en hogere belastingen.<\/p>\n
