Washington DC was vorige week vol met hoopvolle voorstanders, toezichthouders, ambtenaren en investeerders uit de industrie om alles over nicotine te bespreken op het Global Tobacco & Nicotine Forum (GTNF<\/em>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

De belangrijkste focus voor veel aanwezigen was de presentatie van Brian A. King, directeur van het Center for Tobacco Products van de Amerikaanse FDA. De meeste aanwezige voorstanders genoten van de gedachte King een aantal belangrijke vragen te kunnen stellen waar ze al sinds zijn aantreden in juli op wachtten.<\/span><\/p>\n

King begon met te zeggen dat hij zijn werk zeer serieus neemt als het gaat om het be\u00ebindigen van tabaksgerelateerde schade en sterfgevallen. Hij vervolgde met te zeggen dat toezichthouders kijken naar de "netto voordelen voor de volksgezondheid versus de risico's". Hij gaf echter geen enkele indicatie van hoe hij jongeren \u00e9n volwassenen zal beschermen, of plannen voor een oplossing voor deze volwassenen die geen toegang meer hebben tot de verboden producten waar ze afhankelijk van zijn.<\/span><\/p>\n

In ware FDA-stijl ging King uitgebreid in op het gebruik door jongeren, en natuurlijk vergat hij niet zichzelf en de instantie een schouderklopje te geven voor de snelle verwerking van deze 6,7 miljoen aanvragen. King ging zelfs zo ver dat hij bijna opschepte over het aantal afwijzingen en de 23 producten die door de instantie waren goedgekeurd. Hij vermeldde nooit dat de meeste van deze goedkeuringen betrekking hebben op producten die verouderd zijn, niet meer in productie zijn en zelden door volwassenen worden gebruikt.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Schokkend genoeg gaf hij toe dat e-sigaretten minder risico opleveren dan gewone sigaretten. Toch lijkt hij geen plannen te hebben om de misinformatie van de FDA te corrigeren.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Helaas voor de advocaten die geduldig wachtten op het vragenuurtje van Kings presentatie, kwam hij tijd tekort en verliet hij snel het gebouw. Om het nog erger te maken, sloot King zijn toespraak af met de opmerking dat hij moest gaan omdat hij een ontmoeting had met "een van onze favoriete senatoren". King verwees duidelijk naar de ontmoeting die hij had met senator Dick Durbin. <\/span>later die dag<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ik vind dat King hiermee een kans heeft gemist om eindelijk in gesprek te gaan met de volwassenen en belangenbehartigers die deze producten gebruiken en ervan afhankelijk zijn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ik denk dat de \u201cluie toezichthouders\u201d, zoals hij ons zo vriendelijk noemde in zijn presentatie, terug zullen moeten keren naar de enige mogelijkheid waar we onze mening kunnen uiten over deze belangrijke kwesties waar we nog steeds geen antwoord op hebben.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
