CANBERRA, 13 februari 2026<\/strong>De World Vapers' Alliance (WVA) heeft officieel haar bewijsmateriaal ingediend bij de Senaatscommissie voor Juridische en Constitutionele Zaken. De WVA waarschuwt dat de restrictieve wetgeving rond e-sigaretten in Australi\u00eb de belangrijkste oorzaak is van de escalerende crisis rond illegale tabak en nicotine in het land.<\/p>\n

In het ingediende document betoogt WVA dat het huidige model, waarbij alleen op recept verkrijgbare producten beschikbaar zijn, een enorm regelgevingsvacu\u00fcm heeft gecre\u00eberd. In plaats van roken terug te dringen, heeft het feitelijke verbod op e-sigaretten voor consumenten de volledige marktcontrole in handen gegeven van transnationale georganiseerde misdaadsyndicaten. Deze verschuiving heeft geleid tot een sterke toename van illegale handel, verlies aan belastinginkomsten en een golf van geweld in de gemeenschap, waaronder spraakmakende brandstichtingen in winkels en ramkraken.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/em>Het Australische experiment met een feitelijk verbod is een geschenk voor de georganiseerde misdaad.<\/em><\/strong> Door de legale toegang tot minder schadelijke alternatieven te blokkeren, heeft de overheid het nicotinegebruik niet gestopt, maar er simpelweg voor gezorgd dat elke dollar die eraan wordt besteed, criminele bendes financiert in plaats van de volksgezondheid. We dringen er bij de commissie op aan het voorbeeld te volgen van wereldleiders zoals Zweden en Nieuw-Zeeland: legaliseer, reguleer en belast e-sigaretten op basis van de risico's die ze met zich meebrengen. <\/em>Je kunt een illegale markt niet bestrijden door het legale alternatief ontoegankelijk te maken.<\/em><\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Terwijl het Australische beleid stagneert, hebben landen als Zweden, het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Nieuw-Zeeland recordlage rookcijfers bereikt door tabakschadebeperking (Tobacco Harm Reduction, THR) te omarmen. In Australi\u00eb blijven de rook- en dampcijfers onder jongeren echter hoger dan in veel gereguleerde markten, wat aantoont dat verboden niet de leeftijdsverificatie bieden die wel aanwezig is in legale winkels.<\/p>\n

De WVA pleit voor een risico-evenredig regelgevingskader dat producten met een laag risico, zoals e-sigaretten en nicotinezakjes, behandelt als consumentengoederen voor volwassenen.
