Riga, 11 oktober 2023.<\/strong> De Letse regering heeft een reeks maatregelen aangenomen wijzigingen in de accijnswet<\/a> Dit omvat onder meer een geleidelijke verhoging van de accijnzen op e-liquids en andere tabaksvervangende producten. De accijnstarieven op e-liquids en hun componenten zullen in 2024, 2025 en 2026 gemiddeld met 211 TP4T per jaar stijgen, terwijl de accijns op tabaksvervangende producten, waaronder nicotinezakjes, met 101 TP4T zal stijgen. De wijzigingen zullen de inspanningen van Letland om roken terug te dringen negatief be\u00efnvloeden, doordat overstappen minder aantrekkelijk wordt.<\/p>\n

Alberto G\u00f3mez Hern\u00e1ndez, communitymanager van de World Vapers' Alliance, gaf de volgende reactie:<\/p>\n

\u201cHet verhogen van de belasting op veiligere nicotineproducten zal rokers ontmoedigen om over te stappen en gebruikers terugdrijven naar roken. Internationaal onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat een verhoging van de belasting op e-sigaretten en e-vloeistoffen altijd leidt tot een toename van het roken, met name onder jongvolwassenen en mensen met een laag inkomen. Letland zou het voorbeeld moeten volgen van landen die erin slagen het aantal rokers terug te dringen door rokers aan te moedigen over te stappen, zoals het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Zweden, in plaats van het voor hen duurder te maken.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Het wetsvoorstel zal ook de accijnstarieven op verhitte tabaksproducten en gewone sigaretten jaarlijks met respectievelijk 51 TP4T en 5,61 TP4T verhogen.<\/p>\n

\u201cVapen is minder schadelijk dan roken en zou als zodanig behandeld moeten worden. De Letse overheid zou een risicogebaseerde aanpak moeten hanteren voor de belastingheffing op tabak en alternatieve nicotineproducten, waarbij veiligere producten lagere belastingen betalen dan traditionele sigaretten. Integendeel, deze maatregelen zijn erop gericht de prijs van alternatieve producten sneller te verhogen dan die van traditionele sigaretten, waarmee een dergelijke aanpak feitelijk wordt teruggedraaid.,<\/em>\u201d" voegde G\u00f3mez Hern\u00e1ndez eraan toe.<\/p>\n

\u201cLanden zouden er altijd naar moeten streven een groot prijsverschil te behouden tussen minder schadelijke nicotineproducten en traditionele sigaretten.
