Meer dan acht miljoen mensen sterven jaarlijks aan de gevolgen van roken, waarvan bijna 991.400.000 tabaksgerelateerde sterfgevallen worden veroorzaakt door roken \u2013 niet door andere vormen van nicotinegebruik. Bangladesh, net als veel andere landen, voert al decennialang een felle strijd tegen de tabaksepidemie. Naar schatting wonen er 6,2 miljoen volwassen rokers in het land. De visie van de overheid om een tabaksvrij Bangladesh te realiseren is lovenswaardig, en het is tijd om onze aanpak van schadebeperking te herzien. De oorlog tegen tabak heeft zich te lang ten onrechte gericht op nicotine als de voornaamste boosdoener, terwijl cruciale nuances over het hoofd werden gezien.<\/p>\n<p>Nicotine is een natuurlijk bestanddeel dat voorkomt in diverse groenten en planten, met name tabak. In tegenstelling tot wat vaak wordt gedacht, veroorzaakt nicotine zelf, hoewel verslavend, geen ziekten. De voornaamste gezondheidsrisico&#039;s van roken komen voort uit de verbranding van tabak. Sigarettenrook bevat meer dan 7000 chemische stoffen. Van deze stoffen zijn er minstens 250 bekend als schadelijk voor de gezondheid, zoals waterstofcyanide, koolmonoxide en ammoniak.
