De Europese Commissie heeft in haar "Wereldwijde Gezondheidsstrategie" aangekondigd dat het nieuwe leidende principe zal zijn om "prioriteit te geven aan het aanpakken van de grondoorzaken van ziekte". Helaas pakt de strategie een van de belangrijkste oorzaken van ziekte \u2013 roken \u2013 niet aan. Tabakschadebeperking moet in een dergelijke strategie worden opgenomen om door roken veroorzaakte ziekten te bestrijden, stelt de actiegroep World Vapers' Alliance.<\/h4>\n

Michael Landl, directeur van de World Vapers' Alliance, gaf de volgende reactie: \u201cDe Europese Commissie negeert opnieuw de wetenschap en de stem van de consument. Tabaksschadebeperking moet een essentieel onderdeel worden van al het gezondheidsbeleid van de EU. Jaarlijks sterven zevenhonderdduizend mensen aan de gevolgen van roken, en tegelijkertijd verzet de Commissie zich tegen minder schadelijke alternatieven. De wetenschap is duidelijk: vapen is veel minder schadelijk dan roken en is een van de meest effectieve hulpmiddelen om te stoppen met roken. Consumenten eisen dat de Commissie deze realiteit eindelijk erkent.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

De World Vapers' Alliance heeft een verzoekschrift<\/a> De petitie, ondertekend door meer dan 4.000 EU-burgers en gericht aan de leden van het Europees Parlement, uitte haar bezorgdheid over de negatieve houding ten opzichte van vapen binnen de EU-instellingen. In de petitie werd de EU opgeroepen om zich in te zetten voor het verminderen van de schadelijke gevolgen van tabak en af te zien van verboden op smaakstoffen en hogere belastingen.<\/p>\n
