The World Vapers\u2019 Alliance (WVA) has released its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/law\/better-regulation\/have-your-say\/initiatives\/12645-Tobacco-taxation-excise-duties-for-manufactured-tobacco-products-updated-rules-\/F33094390_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">position paper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the European Commission\u2019s proposal to revise the Tobacco Excise Directive, <\/span><b>warning that the plan would punish millions of smokers trying to quit and undermine Europe\u2019s smoke-free goals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first time, the Commission proposes EU-wide minimum taxes on vaping products, heated tobacco, and nicotine pouches, bringing their prices close to those of cigarettes. According to the WVA,<\/span><b> this would remove the main incentive for smokers to switch to safer alternatives, fuel illicit markets, and protect cigarette sales rather than reduce them<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alberto G\u00f3mez Hern\u00e1ndez, Policy Manager at the World Vapers\u2019 Alliance, said: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis proposal is a disaster for public health. Taxing smoke-free products like cigarettes will keep people smoking instead of quitting. <\/span><\/i><b><i>The Commission is ignoring science, citizens, and real-world success stories<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from countries like Sweden that prove harm reduction works.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the plan, taxes on vaping liquids would more than double retail prices in most EU countries. Nicotine pouches would be taxed at 50% of their retail price, and heated tobacco at 55% or more of retail value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The WVA also denounced the Commission for spreading misinformation and for misrepresenting citizens\u2019 input<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in its own public consultations, where the majority of respondents opposed higher taxes on reduced-risk products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe EU claims to want a smoke-free future and we have overwhelming evidence that risk-based regulation helps, but they keep ignoring these facts and put ideology before science.
