{"id":5773,"date":"2024-08-16T07:16:20","date_gmt":"2024-08-16T11:16:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/?p=5773"},"modified":"2024-09-06T07:17:36","modified_gmt":"2024-09-06T11:17:36","slug":"disposable-vape-ban-threatens-new-zealands-world-leader-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/eu\/disposable-vape-ban-threatens-new-zealands-world-leader-status\/","title":{"rendered":"Disposable Vape Ban Threatens New Zealand\u2019s \u201cWorld Leader\u201d Status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite being lauded as a world leader in tobacco harm reduction and approaching \u201csmoke-free\u201d status, New Zealand is banning disposable vapes.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in August, the World Vapers\u2019 Alliance <a href=\"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/eu\/new-zealands-smoke-free-status-at-risk-due-to-the-disposable-ban-the-wva-warns\/\">warned<\/a> that the ban, advanced in the name of reducing youth vaping, \u201ccould undermine the progress made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.govt.nz\/system\/files\/documents\/information-release\/smokefree_2025_-_cracking_down_on_youth_vaping_cab-24-min-0084_black_box_watermarked.pdf\">policy<\/a>, which the government first <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/new-zealand-vapes-ban-disposable-ecigarettes-smoking-d74821c351aef9a1c086c0d9089b847b\">announced<\/a> in March and plans to have in place by the end of the year, applies to the manufacture, import and sale of all non-rechargeable devices and non-refillable pods and cartridges.<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand\u2019s embrace of vapes has been key to the rapid reduction of its smoking rate to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.govt.nz\/news-media\/news-items\/new-zealands-smoking-rates-continue-decline\">6.8 percent<\/a> by 2023\u2014close to the \u201csmoke-free\u201d threshold of below 5 percent. But many of the people who switched from cigarettes have been using devices that will now be banned.<\/p>\n<p>To tobacco harm reduction advocates, it all feels like one step forward, one step back.
