The King\u2019s College London <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/news\/daily-e-cigarette-use-shows-clear-benefit-in-helping-smokers-to-quit\">paper<\/a> shows that smokers are five times more likely to successfully give up cigarettes by using vaping as a quit tool, compared to when they try it alone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Showdown: New Zealand vs. Australia\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Geographic neighbours, but polar opposites when it comes to vaping policy.<\/p>\n<p>Although both started off from a similar position of scepticism on vaping, in 2018 New Zealand did a U-turn and embraced vaping as a tool to help smokers <a href=\"https:\/\/vapingfacts.health.nz\/vaping-to-quit-smoking\/\">quit.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Australia, on the other hand, continued down the same anti-vaping path paying no heed to growing evidence or the policies being adopted in other countries.<\/p>\n<p>And the results? Well, they don\u2019t leave much room for doubt.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1591\" src=\"https:\/\/wvaold.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/nfR6wBzOxNL0eBgvn4rvbIvMHgeEvw04D4r4FZhAWhdcDZxAPT3ZSJt2ks67v78Gopq0FdFNfs8H0LWFgM4xqRbsaod9W638AAccJ7y3tBtM_srv2sQq8UvU3dsrjFb-RA-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>The draconian vaping restrictions in Australia resulted in an <em>increase in smoking<\/em>. Whereas in New Zealand, where restrictions were lightened, <em>smoking decreased<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><strong>The lesson from this Antipodean case study is pretty simple:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The more governments restrict access to vapes, the more smokers that will stay stuck on cigarettes. Meanwhile, if you reduce vaping restrictions, and utilise vaping as a way to help smokers quit, then smoking rates fall.<\/p>\n<p>Considering that the aim of most governments is to reduce national smoking levels, they could do a lot worse than to take a leaf out of New Zealand\u2019s book, embrace the vape and adopt a policy that is proven to work.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have had yet another scientific research paper showing that vaping helps smokers\u2019 quit.
