The decision ignores a substantial body of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/en_gb\/harm-reduction-vaping-fact-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showing that flavours are a key reason adult smokers switch away from cigarettes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke called vaping &#8220;an invention of a criminal industry&#8221; that hides harmful substances behind flavours like mint, apple, or raspberry. This is not public health policy. It is scaremongering dressed up as child protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Landl, Director of the World Vapers&#8217; Alliance, said:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>&#8220;Frank Vandenbroucke calling vaping a criminal invention is not just wrong, it is dangerous. It tells hundreds of thousands of Belgian vapers who quit smoking with the help of flavoured products that their choice was a crime. That kind of rhetoric has no place in a serious public health debate. The ban will push consumers back to smoking or the black market. Another gift for criminals from the government.&#8221;<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The evidence is clear. Adults using flavoured e-cigarettes have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32501490\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">230% higher odds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of quitting smoking than those using tobacco or unflavoured products. Nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0306460321003373?via%3Dihub#s0055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half of vapers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say they would return to cigarettes or seek products on the black market if flavours were banned. <\/span><b><i>\u201cBelgium is not protecting anyone. It is pushing former smokers back to the most harmful product on the market,\u201d<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Landl added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brusselstimes.com\/2076002\/dutch-vape-flavour-ban-backfires-new-report-shows-rise-in-youth-use-illicit-trade-and-smoking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netherlands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> banned flavours before Belgium. Vaping and smoking among adolescents went up in the year that followed. That is the model Belgium has chosen to copy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belgium has notified the European Commission and plans for the rules to take effect on 1 September 2028.
