Turn on the TV and you\u2019ll get a different sense of the most pressing problems for youths, namely, vaping.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a saying in military circles, \u201cmind the alligator closest to the boat,\u201d and U.S. politicians desperately need to get a handle on the most pressing issues for young people.<\/p>\n<p>The report shows that across North America, deaths among teenagers and young adults have increased significantly since 2011. Worldwide, anxiety disorders have increased by 63 percent and depression by 26 percent in recent years. Meantime, chronic diseases tied to lifestyle factors, including diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and stroke are rising among younger populations.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers estimate that almost two-thirds of the global disease burden is now due to non-communicable diseases. Half of all deaths and disabilities worldwide could be prevented by addressing factors like obesity, high blood sugar and tobacco use.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this evidence, lawmakers continue to fixate on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/schumer-calls-for-federal-action-on-zyn-nicotine-pouches\/\">nicotine<\/a>\u00a0and vaping. State legislatures made moves in 2025 to limit or restrict these products for adults and future generations.<\/p>\n<p>Youth protection is always the stated reason, and it\u2019s an understandable motive, but ignorant of the most pressing drivers of youth mortality. Would-be regulators are often responding to coordinated campaigns by activists and parents operating on faulty premises or dated myths. For starters, smoking has never been less of a problem than it is today, and that\u2019s according to the CDC\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/php\/data-statistics\/youth-data-tobacco\/index.html#:~:text=Accessibility%2C%20availability%2C%20and%20price%20of,1112%20These%20activities%20include:\">latest<\/a>\u00a0data on youth tobacco use. Adult smoking\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.degruyterbrill.com\/document\/doi\/10.2202\/1935-1682.2438\/html\">rates<\/a>\u00a0are also at their lowest level in 75 years.<\/p>\n<p>Still, a majority of Americans\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5328980\/\">wrongly associate<\/a>\u00a0nicotine with cancer caused by smoking. Then there\u2019s the worry that vaping leads teenagers toward conventional smoking, which is also not supported by evidence. Research systematically refutes the \u201cgateway\u201d myth.<\/p>\n<p>Meta\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6652100\/\">studies<\/a>\u00a0find no hard link between vaping and picking up cigarettes. Many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1003555\">factors<\/a>\u00a0combine to drive youth behavior, including anxiety, depression, economic circumstances, family history and peer-group pressure.<\/p>\n<p>A glaring assertion is that young people who use e-cigarettes tend to be smokers already. For example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vapingpost.com\/2020\/04\/28\/study-vaping-is-a-gateway-out-of-not-into-smoking\/\">research<\/a>\u00a0found that nearly all adolescents who vape regularly have a history of smoking, while less than 0.5 percent of never-smokers vape regularly. All in all,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2024\/p0905-youth-ecigarette.html\">youth e-cigarette use<\/a>\u00a0is also down to the lowest level in a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, these behaviors are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/reason.org\/commentary\/the-youth-vaping-epidemic-is-over\/\">not well-received<\/a>\u00a0among young people. The risks they take are more often in the online realm and present more immediate harm. More young people have\u00a0died\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/new-york-city\/subway-surfing-girls-dead-j-train-williamsburg\/6400847\/\">subway surfing<\/a>\u201d for TikTok videos than have ever died from legal, regulated vape products.<\/p>\n<p>Public officials should take these findings seriously and prioritize a strengthening of mental health services, addiction treatment and public health campaigns targeting the true drivers of the current youth mortality crisis. Advocates and politicians like to believe they can \u201cwalk and chew gum at the same time.\u201d In reality, attention spent on advancing restrictive vaping bans for adults (youth vaping is already banned) diverts time and resources away from the drivers of this spike in youth mortality.<\/p>\n<p>Meantime, these measures discourage adult smokers from switching to less harmful nicotine alternatives that could significantly reduce their exposure to dangerous toxins.<\/p>\n<p>Preventing youth vaping is crucial and is being achieved to a significant extent.
