The paper, led by Yusuff Adebayo Adebisi and colleagues, offers a comprehensive review of the phrase\u2019s prevalence and its harmful implications for science, policy, and public perception.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>\ud83d\udd25<\/b><b> Smoking \u2260 Vaping<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term \u201ce-cigarette smoking\u201d appears simple enough\u2014but it&#8217;s misleading and fundamentally incorrect. Smoking refers to the combustion of tobacco, a process that releases tar, carbon monoxide, and thousands of toxic chemicals. Google Scholar alone returned more than 4,600 mentions. This kind of linguistic slippage conflates two behaviors with drastically different risk profiles, and the consequences are not merely semantic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>\ud83d\udcc9<\/b><b> Scientific Confusion \u2192 Policy Problems<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The continued use of \u201ce-cigarette smoking\u201d does more than muddle terminology. According to the study, it actively undermines:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Public health messaging<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: If vaping is casually equated with smoking, adult smokers considering switching may believe there\u2019s no point\u2014discouraging a move that could significantly reduce their exposure to harmful toxicants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scientific credibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Imprecise language can cast doubt on the objectivity of peer-reviewed research and skew how results are interpreted by clinicians, journalists, and policymakers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Clinical care<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Doctors relying on flawed terminology may inappropriately classify vapers as smokers, leading to misguided treatment decisions\u2014such as unnecessary cancer screenings or irrelevant cessation advice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Regulation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Equating the two behaviors may prompt governments to apply cigarette-style restrictions to vape products\u2014policies that could backfire by reducing access to safer nicotine alternatives.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><b>\ud83e\udde0<\/b><b> Words Matter\u2014Especially in Public Health<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors of the review don\u2019t mince words. They call the use of \u201ce-cigarette smoking\u201d an entrenched linguistic error that \u201cobscures differences in addiction mechanisms, harm reduction potential, and public perceptions of risk.\u201d They urge scientific journals to revise editorial policies, adopt standardized terms like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cvaping\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ce-cigarette use\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and avoid behavior conflation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re not alone. Leading harm reduction experts have long pointed out that calling vapers \u201csmokers\u201d reinforces stigma, confuses the public, and helps justify overly broad regulations that fail to reflect the true risk spectrum of nicotine products.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>\ud83d\udeab<\/b><b> Let\u2019s Stop Calling It \u201cSmoking\u201d<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t just a matter of correcting language. It\u2019s about ensuring that people\u2014especially adult smokers looking for safer options\u2014receive accurate information from research, media, and healthcare providers. It\u2019s about building policies on evidence, not outdated or misleading terminology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the authors conclude, \u201cMischaracterizing vaping as a form of smoking may discourage harm reduction, distort risk communication, and undermine the development of balanced, evidence-informed policy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s raise the bar.
