Over a decade later, we still hear identical claims, despite extensive research showing vaping to be less harmful than smoking and effective as a smoking cessation tool. Here\u2019s a look at some outdated arguments that refuse to go away:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5843\" src=\"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-1-300x55.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"802\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-1-300x55.png 300w, https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-1-18x3.png 18w, https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-1.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 802px) 100vw, 802px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2013, the Ministry <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moh.gov.sg\/newsroom\/no-conclusive-evidence-that-demonstrates-effectiveness-of-e-cigarettes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We remain cautious as there is no conclusive scientific evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of e-cigarettes in helping smokers quit tobacco use.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sound familiar? Unfortunately, Singapore\u2019s Ministry of Health <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthhub.sg\/programmes\/iquit\/e-cig\/vaping-mistruths#home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still makes this claim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> today, asserting that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;smokers who used vapes to help them quit cigarettes were less likely to succeed than those using pharmaceutical aids or no product at all.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s astonishing that ten years of research, including studies demonstrating vaping\u2019s effectiveness, seem to have made no impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5844\" src=\"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-2-300x87.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"803\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-2-300x87.png 300w, https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-2-18x5.png 18w, https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-2.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 803px) 100vw, 803px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some recent findings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37712011\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Aycock et al. (2023)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people who use vaping specifically to quit smoking have higher one-year abstinence rates compared to those using it for other reasons.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/nejmoa1808779\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Hajek et al. (2019)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concluded that vaping is twice as effective as traditional nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) for smoking cessation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And there\u2019s more. Back in 2013, Singapore warned that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cE-cigarettes could potentially be a gateway to developing a smoking habit, particularly among the young.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5846\" src=\"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-4-300x49.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"833\" height=\"136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-4-300x49.png 300w, https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-4-18x3.png 18w, https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-4.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 833px) 100vw, 833px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet a decade later, studies consistently show that vaping does not serve as a gateway to smoking. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6652100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Lee, Coombs &amp; Afolalu (2018)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reviewed fifteen studies, finding no evidence of a \u201cgateway effect\u201d and highlighting other factors like anxiety and parental smoking habits as key influences on youth behavior.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2773464\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Meza, Jim\u00e9nez-Mendoza &amp; Levy (2020)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed that youth smoking rates have dropped even as vaping has increased, with adolescent smoking reaching historic lows in the US.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite all of this, Singapore still claims that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cyouth who use vapes are more likely to progress to conventional cigarettes.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5845\" src=\"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-3-300x117.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"779\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-3-300x117.png 300w, https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-3-18x7.png 18w, https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/blog-image-3.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 779px) 100vw, 779px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, it\u2019s fair to question if this is willful ignorance. With a decade of research showing the benefits of vaping as a safer alternative and effective cessation tool, it\u2019s high time that policies reflect reality, not outdated fears.
