However, increasing taxes on vaping products often leads to unintended consequences. Numerous studies have shown that when the price of e-liquids rises, many users, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/add.16002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially young adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, switch back to traditional cigarettes. This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36103752\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cross-price effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> undermines public health efforts by increasing smoking rates instead of reducing them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Landl, Director of the World Vapers\u2019 Alliance, emphasised: \u201cTaxation must be proportional to the risks of products. Vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking, yet this tax treats it similarly, undermining public health. <\/span><b>Smokers should be incentivized to switch, not pushed back to cigarettes due to higher prices.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research also shows that higher taxes on less harmful nicotine products discourage smokers from switching, a problem that particularly affects low and middle-income groups. As for users, when faced with increased vaping costs, many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scholars.uky.edu\/en\/publications\/intended-and-unintended-effects-of-e-cigarette-taxes-on-youth-tob\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turn to smoking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reversing the positive health outcomes seen in harm reduction-focused countries like the UK and Sweden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alberto G\u00f3mez Hern\u00e1ndez, Policy Manager at the World Vapers\u2019 Alliance, added: \u201c<\/span><b>Raising taxes on less harmful alternatives is counterproductive.
