{"id":5107,"date":"2023-11-09T04:27:50","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T09:27:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/?p=5107"},"modified":"2025-09-11T07:25:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T11:25:19","slug":"youth-vaping-rate-reaches-new-low-fda-unimpressed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/en_gb\/youth-vaping-rate-reaches-new-low-fda-unimpressed\/","title":{"rendered":"Youth Vaping Rate Reaches New Low, FDA Unimpressed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the CDC released its new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/viewerng\/viewer?url=https:\/\/cbs6albany.com\/resources\/pdf\/9fb03aa7-9df4-422c-9f51-72b882f9e6fb-MMWRNovember32023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 National Youth Survey (NYTS) <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data last week, vapers were thrilled to learn that youth usage had decreased to 10% from 14% the previous year <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(with a 61% drop over the past four years)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Tobacco harm reduction advocates saw a glimmer of hope that this might persuade the CTP at the FDA to change their stance on vaping and, more importantly, flavors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the day progressed, we started to see posts from many ANTZ groups like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TobaccoFreeKids\/status\/1720126731514695783?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthinitiative.org\/press\/press-release\/significant-decline-e-cigarette-use-among-high-school-students-indicates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Truth Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spin this positive information into a negative, all the while still urging FDA \u201cto protect young people by removing\u00a0<\/span><b>all<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0products without marketing authorization from the market, as the overwhelming majority of these products are flavored and appeal to youth\u201d\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of us were shocked that these organizations responded in this manner; we expected this kind of spin on the good news, but the biggest hit was yet to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, as if on cue, the FDA released their statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The news release from the FDA titled<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/national-survey-shows-drop-e-cigarette-use-among-high-school-students?utm_source=CTPTwitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=ctp-nyts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><b>National Survey Shows Drop in E-Cigarette Use Among High School Students <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA Continues Push to Curb Youth Use with Additional Round of Fines Against Retailers for Illegal E-cigarette Sales\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the FDA claims that these declines are \u201cencouraging\u201d but in true FDA fashion goes on to claim that \u201calthough a decrease in e-cigarette use was observed among high school students, among middle school students there was an increase in current overall tobacco product use (4.5% to 6.6%) and multiple tobacco product use (1.5% to 2.5%). However, among middle school students overall, no significant change was observed during 2022-2023 for current use of any individual tobacco product type, including e-cigarettes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The release continues with more of the same claims about flavors: \u201cAmong youth who reported current e-cigarette use, nearly all used flavored products (89.4%), with fruit, candy, mint and menthol being the most commonly used flavors\u201d and more promises of civil money penalties and fines for retailers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA wraps up the release with this statement: \u201cYouth use of tobacco products in any form \u2013 including e-cigarettes \u2013 is unsafe. Keeping tobacco products out of the hands of youth remains a top priority for the FDA. The FDA\u2019s continued efforts, including the enforcement actions announced today, mark important progress toward achieving that goal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hope that the FDA will finally see the light and take the adults who use these products into consideration seems like it fades a little with each new release like this one. If keeping tobacco products out of the hands of youth is their \u201ctop priority\u201d, where do the adults fall on this list? Are they even on it at all?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This begs the question&#8230; how low does youth use have to go to get the FDA to start to pay attention to the bigger picture?
