{"id":4874,"date":"2023-10-13T06:40:01","date_gmt":"2023-10-13T10:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/?p=4874"},"modified":"2025-09-11T07:26:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T11:26:07","slug":"the-world-is-on-fire-literally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/en_gb\/the-world-is-on-fire-literally\/","title":{"rendered":"The World is on Fire\u2026 Literally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we gear up for COP10 happening late this November the internet seems to be flooded with more baseless lies about tobacco harm reduction, attempting to prepare us for the WHO\u2019s unscientific stance on nicotine products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gerry Stimson, director of the KAC makes this veracious statement on the messaging coming from the WHO and FCTC Secretariat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cThe WHO and FCTC Secretariat\u2019s refusal to engage with evidence from multiple countries that have witnessed accelerated declines in smoking rates is unscientific and unjustifiable. Their repeated characterization of safer nicotine products as a threat to tobacco control runs directly counter to what should be the overarching goals of the Convention\u2013to reduce smoking-related deaths and disease as rapidly and effectively as <a href=\"https:\/\/tobaccoreporter.com\/2023\/10\/10\/cop10-to-ignore-harm-reduction-briefing\/?fbclid=IwAR11sOrQCFzXGW_yByS8M54_Tga_kUzPtNx-6GE4AgvwDdWEn1qDmUtiEdc\">possible<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gsthr.org\/briefing-papers\/the-fctc-cop10-agenda-and-supporting-documents-implications-for-the-future-of-tobacco-harm-reduction\/?fbclid=IwAR1LRVLwLuymX1-1boyKSxzyVryHMX2j4t2SQ5gFohLtmO4eE5hHEZ7K4bs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a newly released briefing paper <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the general direction laid out for the upcoming COP10 event is quite alarming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These main takeaways stated in the briefing are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 to treat all SNP the same as combustible tobacco;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 to extend and apply regulations for tobacco products to all forms of nicotine and tobacco products;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 to define all aerosols emitted from \u201cnovel and emerging tobacco products\u201d as \u2018smoke\u2019;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 to apply the same prohibition and\/or regulation to SNP as to conventional cigarettes, including banning use where smoking is prohibited, having large graphic health warnings, plain packaging, and a ban on all advertising, promotion and sponsorship;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 a ban on all \u2018open system\u2019 vaping products;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 a ban on all flavours except tobacco for all SNP; and,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 to tax all nicotine-containing products at the same rate as cigarettes.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile there is more and more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochrane.org\/news\/latest-cochrane-review-finds-high-certainty-evidence-nicotine-e-cigarettes-are-more-effective\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that safer nicotine products are just that. SAFER.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while most recently we have seen<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/24337268\/uk-defy-who-vaping-ban-swap-to-stop\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=sharebarweb&amp;fbclid=IwAR3H5cE_sNlBbjFrkKwFVYQm--n_FoLVo2FTtLrtVgZ2EWtsHO-ocPhgd9I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the UK defy the call for recent vaping bans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with their minister\u2019s rightly standing up for the groundbreaking \u201cswap to stop\u201d campaign. We are all left wondering how they will handle WHO\u2019s illogical stance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK has done amazing things for people who smoke by promoting and providing harm reduction products for adults. It surely has made people like me wish our country would follow the UK\u2019s approach to THR. In the United States we all fear the demise of this life saving technology as we are constantly fighting bans, disinformation and government overreach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personally I am hopeful that the UK will do as they have in the past; fight to protect this life saving technology and defend it at all costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now is not the time to back down.
