The planned ban <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tbsnews.net\/bangladesh\/law-being-amended-ban-e-cigarettes-448170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> also includes oral nicotine pouches, another <a href=\"https:\/\/filtermag.org\/pakistan-oral-nicotine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">important<\/a> harm reduction alternative in South Asia.<\/p>\n<p>If confirmed, it will be another major blow to harm reduction, when several Asian governments have enacted similar prohibitions.<\/p>\n<p>With almost 170 million people, Bangladesh is the eighth most populous country in the world. And it\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37492418\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major<\/a> tobacco consumer. A national smoking rate of over <a href=\"https:\/\/gsthr.org\/countries\/profile\/bgd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20 percent<\/a>\u2014often traditional <i>bidi<\/i>, as well as cigarettes\u2014contains a large gender split. While very few Bangladeshi women smoke, the rate is about 40 percent among men. The country suffers over 160,000 smoking-related deaths each year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Under the proposed law, anyone caught vaping will be subject to a fine of 5,000 taka (about $46).&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The government has been considering plans for a vape ban <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vapingpost.com\/2019\/12\/31\/bangladesh-a-plan-for-a-total-vape-ban-is-underway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">since 2019<\/a>, when a minister cited the so-called \u201cEVALI\u201d outbreak in the United States\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/filtermag.org\/vapes-and-lung-disease-the-cdcs-lesson-in-how-not-to-handle-an-illness-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blamed on, but not caused by<\/a>, nicotine vapes\u2014as justification.<\/p>\n<p>A draft amendment to Bangladesh\u2019s Smoking and Using of Tobacco Products (Control) Act has now been prepared by the Health Ministry and reviewed by the cabinet.
