{"id":4466,"date":"2023-07-17T04:01:29","date_gmt":"2023-07-17T08:01:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/?p=4466"},"modified":"2023-07-14T07:04:42","modified_gmt":"2023-07-14T11:04:42","slug":"fda-doubles-down-on-prohibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldvapersalliance.com\/en_gb\/fda-doubles-down-on-prohibition\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA Doubles Down on Prohibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On July 10<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the FDA denied the PMTA for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">myblu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Menthol E-Cigarettes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA issued the MDO and released a statement on the reason they issued the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/tobacco-products\/ctp-newsroom\/fda-denies-marketing-myblu-menthol-e-cigarette-product?utm_campaign=ctp-pmta&amp;utm_content=CTPStatement&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery&amp;utm_term=stratcomms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denial<\/a>, <\/span><b>\u201cthorough scientific review of tobacco applications is a key pillar under FDA\u2019s role to protect the public from the dangers of tobacco use,\u201d said Matthew Farrelly, Ph.D., Director of the Office of Science within FDA\u2019s Center for Tobacco Products. \u201cThis application lacked the scientific evidence needed to demonstrate that the product provided a net benefit to the public health that outweigh the known risks.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA didn\u2019t forget to pat themselves on the back for approving <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/tobacco-products\/market-and-distribute-tobacco-product\/tobacco-products-marketing-orders#PMTAView%20all%20marketing%20granted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23 tobacco flavored e-cigarette products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the FDA poised to ban menthol cigarettes, you would think that leaving a safer alternative for these products would be top priority. Sadly, they seem to keep doubling down on prohibition, which we already know is not an effective solution. The FDA also seems to be pursuing an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2023\/03\/24\/the-5th-circuit-rebukes-the-fda-for-flouting-the-law-while-imposing-a-de-facto-ban-on-flavored-e-cigarettes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> illegal de-facto ban on flavors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including menthol; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ntr\/article\/25\/3\/541\/6761959\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many studies prove that these \u201cflavors\u201d are most effective when helping adults quit smoking.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the FDA refuses to acknowledge that flavors help adults quit smoking in products like e-cigarettes, they do acknowledge that flavors help in other adult products. Just three days prior to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">myblu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MDO they issued an approval for a lemon-lime drink for patients prepping for a colonoscopy. Suflave, the new citrus-flavored liquid\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/colonoscopy\/guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colonoscopy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0prep, is designed to taste more like a sports drink than medicine, according to its developer Sebela Pharmaceuticals. It will be available by prescription starting in early August, Sebela said in a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/fda-approves-sebela-pharmaceuticals-suflave-a-new-colonoscopy-preparation-that-tastes-similar-to-a-sports-drink-301858251.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA really needs to rethink this prohibitionist approach to vaping and flavors or the illicit market will take over, leaving responsible retailers out of work and many adults with no other option but to buy unregulated products or return to smoking.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On July 10th the FDA denied the PMTA for myblu Menthol E-Cigarettes.
