The debate, which is mirrored internationally, pits environmental concerns and familiar fears of youth uptake against the specific role of disposables in helping people switch from smoking.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the high-end supermarket chain Waitrose, with over 300 stores around the UK, said it\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegrocer.co.uk\/waitrose\/waitrose-withdraws-from-disposable-vape-market-citing-environmental-concerns\/674993.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \u201cdoing the right thing\u201d<\/a> for public health and the environment by discontinuing sales of all single-use vapes.<\/p>\n<p>Waitrose is the first British supermarket to have taken such a stance. Its commercial director, Charlotte Di Cello, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2022\/dec\/31\/waitrose-stops-selling-single-use-vaping-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a press statement that \u201cselling single-use vapes is not something we could justify given the impact on both the environment and the health of young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UK has generally embraced vaping. An estimated<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2022\/aug\/29\/vaping-reaches-record-levels-great-britain-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 4.3 million people<\/a> here vape. Most formerly smoked\u2014and of the remainder, the large majority currently smoke, indicating they could be on a path to switching entirely.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Young added that the single-use nature of these vapes contributes to large amounts of waste that \u201cend up in landfill and incineration plants.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But single-use vapes, typically made of plastic, rubber, copper and batteries, raise the issue of environmentally responsible disposal.
