Hvert \u00e5r d\u00f8r mere end 8100 mennesker i Kenya af rygerelaterede sygdomme, selvom f\u00e6rre mennesker i gennemsnit bruger r\u00f8gfri tobak i Kenya end i lande med et middel HDI-indeks. Skadebegr\u00e6nsning fra tobak er ikke bredt accepteret eller implementeret, med h\u00f8je afgifter p\u00e5 nikotinholdige produkter med reduceret risiko, herunder e-cigaretter, snus og produkter, der "varmer ikke br\u00e6nder" i Kenya.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mit projekt s\u00f8gte at forbedre implementeringen og forst\u00e5elsen af tobaksskadereduktion blandt rygere, tobaksbrugere, politikere og sundhedspersonale i marginaliserede samfund i Kenya. Rygestopprogrammer inkluderer ikke sikrere nikotinprodukter her i Kenya, og derfor havde mit projekt til form\u00e5l at forbedre implementeringen og forst\u00e5elsen af tobaksskadereduktion blandt politikere, der informerer politikker for det lokale sundhedsministerium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeg udf\u00f8rte sp\u00f8rgeskemaunders\u00f8gelser blandt rygere og sundhedspersonale i nogle marginaliserede samfund i Kenya, is\u00e6r i det vestlige Kenya, Rift Valley og Machakos County,<\/span><\/p>\n

med henblik p\u00e5 at forst\u00e5 perspektivet p\u00e5 skadesreduktion i forbindelse med rygning og tobaksbrug blandt rygere i landdistrikter. Jeg afholdt ogs\u00e5 en lokal workshop med lokale sundhedsarbejdere i rygestopafdelingen i Eldoret for at formidle videnskabelig dokumentation for sikrere nikotinprodukter inden for tobaksskadesreduktion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unders\u00f8gelsen viser, at de fleste sundhedspersonale i landdistrikterne i Kenya ikke forst\u00e5r, at nikotin ikke for\u00e5rsager kr\u00e6ft, hvilket viser, at l\u00e6ger har ringe eller ingen forst\u00e5else for reduktion af tobaksskader og derfor ikke kan r\u00e5dgive regeringen passende om tobakssp\u00f8rgsm\u00e5l. Det bem\u00e6rkes, at det er dem, der kan bidrage med deres stemme og v\u00e6gt til de nationale indsatser for tobakskontrol og engagere sig p\u00e5 nationalt plan i at fremme reduktion af tobaksskader. Politikken for reduktion af tobaksskader s\u00f8ger at reducere den store belastning af cigaretter ved at bev\u00e6ge rygere over i retning af mindre risikable alternativer som vaping. Denne tilgang vinder momentum i lande, hvis avancerede tobakskontrolpolitikker reducerer rygerater betydeligt og dermed redder liv. I Kenya er der imidlertid alt for mange mennesker, der er fast besluttet p\u00e5 at holde fast i den mislykkede tobakskontrolpolitik om at holde op eller d\u00f8 og de myter, der bruges til at videref\u00f8re den.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ud fra de gennemf\u00f8rte unders\u00f8gelser viser langt de fleste respondenter, at de \u00f8nsker at bruge produkter til at reducere skader p\u00e5 tobak, s\u00e5som nikotinposer og vapes\/e-cigaretter, for at hj\u00e6lpe dem med at holde op med traditionelle kr\u00e6ftfremkaldende cigaretter. Alligevel finder n\u00e6sten tre ud af fire personer disse innovative livreddende produkter for dyre eller vanskelige at f\u00e5 fat i, og n\u00e6sten alle ville stoppe med at bruge dem, hvis regeringen h\u00e6vede prisen. Resultaterne viser det presserende behov for, at vores tilsynsmyndigheder behandler sikrere nikotinprodukter som et vigtigt og effektivt redskab i kampen for at redde liv, der g\u00e5r tabt p\u00e5 grund af tobaksfor\u00e5rsagede sygdomme hvert \u00e5r. N\u00e6sten alle de rygere, der deltog i unders\u00f8gelsen, mener, at sikrere nikotinprodukter vil give dem den bedste chance for at holde op med succes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
